More on Wetton-Downes’ iCon and the upcoming album
John Wetton and Geoffrey Downes formed an extraordinary
songwriting partnership – their work has fuelled lists of legendary rock and
roll music since 1981. Fans have been delighted to see them tour with Carl
Palmer and Steve Howe in the Reunion of the Original Members of Asia. The all
new album Phoenix, a special treat to fans, generated the performance of fresh
and memorable hits written by the duo.
While Asia is on hiatus (the band will be back in 2009 for more
dates), fans have demanded more from Wetton and Downes; the two enjoy each
other’s company and love writing together. They are happy to oblige.
This album reunites Wetton with guitarist Dave Kilminster. The
two worked together in the John Wetton band during the nineties, as well as in
the short-lived, but highly distinguished band Qango. Kilminster is a renowned
guitarist whose own reputation as a singer and songwriter has grown. He has
performed with legends of rock such as Wetton, Keith Emerson and Roger Waters.
Kilminster has just completed a 2 year stint on lead guitar and vocals with
Waters’ celebrated global staging of Dark Side of the Moon, which played to
millions. That tour featured a highlighted appearance at the Giants' Stadium
Live Earth Show in 2007, viewed by almost 2 billion people (approximately a
third the world population). Dave is much in demand and his guitar work is
simply stunning. Wetton and Kilminster are very much looking forward to working
together again.
Cellist Hugh McDowell once again joins the iCon family. He
appeared on both prior albums, although 2009 marks the first time he will play
live with the band. Well-known for having helped construct and develop the
unique sound of ELO (Electric Light Orchestra), Hugh was an ever-present in that
band's enormous and lengthy success, he also adds a special flavour to iCon.
Wetton says, “Hugh McDowell is an integral part of iCon’s
organic personality. His presence in the music adds more than sonic
embellishment – it changes the essential fingerprint of the music.”
Drummer Pete Riley has long been considered “one of the best
drummers in rock” by those legends of rock who have worked with him ... and
those who’ve simply watched him on stage. Riley is featured on Kilminster’s solo
album and has toured with Kilminster as part of the Keith Emerson Band. He is
well known throughout the world as an extraordinary musician in live and session
work. Riley's skills span all types of music from rock to complex fusion and
jazz.
Wetton and Downes are pleased to be able to respond to fan and
critical demand by returning to the studio to create this new album and then to
tour it with these outstanding players.

August 20, 2008---The
August/September issue of Elmore Magazine includes a great review of Phoenix:
Progressive supergroup Asia will never duplicate the mammoth success of
their 1982 debut. They won't have any more hit singles stateside or any more
platinum records, but they can find solace in the fact that they are among the
best progressive rock players ever, and still make amazing music whenever
they're together. As cliche as it sounds, Phoenix is the best rebirth this band
could have experienced.
With ELP alum Carl Palmer, Buggles keyboardist Geoff Downes, Yes axe-man
Steve Howe and former King Crimson leader John Wetton reunited after 25 years
apart, fans can expect nothing but high quality, both in the music produced and
the attitudes conveyed.
"Never Again" is a defining opening track, expressing the same musical intensity
as the band's hit of yore, "Only Time Will Tell". Wetton's vocals have renewed
vigor and vitality, and Asia's music delves into wonderful depth and emotion.
Howe's guitar work hasn't been this inspiring since Yes' Close To The Edge was
released in 1972. When Downes' synthesizer melodies climb higher and higher,
Howe follows his every move, culminating in tight structure and total harmony.
Forget those "Heat of the Moment" days; Asia hasn't returned with commercial
intentions. They know what they produce is magic. Take your pick of any track:
"An Extraordinary Life," "Alibis," "Parallel Worlds/Vortex/Deya," "Shadow of a
Doubt" - no matter what, you're still treated to pure progressive pleasure.
Speaking of cliches, we all know the saying "The whole is equal to the sum of
the parts". Listen to Phoenix and you'll realize there's one hell of a musical
equation at work.
August 14, 2008---During Asia's stop in
Japan, John recorded a really great interview for Best Hit USA 2008 on Japanese
TV. The broadcast also included some live concert footage. You can view it on
YouTube by following this link:

July 17, 2008---Some
very cool news today for John Wetton fans in the Far East. John's famous '65
Fender Jazz bass is headed to its new home at the Hard Rock Cafe in Yokohama,
Japan. This is the bass John has played since his days with King Crimson.
No doubt fans will recognize it from the videos for UK's "Nothing to Lose" and
Asia's "Heat of the Moment." I hope you'll join me in congratulating John
on this much-deserved rock honor.
July 16, 2008---We are pleased to
unveil the details on a new contest - one in which fans have the chance to
design their very own video for "An Extraordinary Life" from the new Phoenix
studio album. For all of the details, simply click hereand follow

June 26, 2008---We
are aware that there are organizations attempting to pass off merchandise,
recordings and even performances as being officially endorsed by Asia.
Intellectual property abuse cannot
masquerade behind the “get out clause” of caveat emptor; it is theft, larceny,
piracy, pure and simple.
As has been mentioned before on Asia and member sites, one of the most efficient
weapons against any form of piracy is to deny the oxygen of publicity, so we
will not publicize any examples.
We would instead repeat previous
admonitions that if a performance / CD / merchandise item is not endorsed on the
official / member site [s], it cannot be regarded as official.
Asia’s
and its members’ names and reputations are constantly being monitored by their
lawyers.
May 31, 2008---End of tour statement:
"After three months of solid touring to promote the new
'Phoenix' album, the last show tonight in Bratislava is packed to the rafters,
as was Prague on Thursday. In addition, Budapest last night had a healthy
audience in a prestigious rock venue. After 52 shows, the band will be
returning home to England tomorrow. Thanks to all fans in Europe who came out to
see the long awaited reunion tour in Spain [four venues], Portugal, France [two
venues], Holland, Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia. Not forgetting all of
you in England, Wales, Scotland, the United States and Japan. Thanks to
you all and we'll see you again, and other countries too, in the near future."
May 27, 2008---"We confirm that unless dates are
posted on the official site's gig section, any rumours of Asia gigs remain
simply rumours or misrepresentations."
May 15, 2008---With the successful
2008 US tour now concluded, we have been able to include several new items in
the Asia Gift Shop. We have limited supplies of the "Only Time Will Tell" and
the Phoenix "Carpe Diem" wall clocks signed by all 4 members!!! Plus the
official 2008 Tour Program and the "Extraordinary Life" All Purpose Tote Bag.
Check it out by clicking here.
May 12, 2008---FANTASTIC news from
Japan this morning. Tonight's show at the International Forum Arena (which seats
5000) has sold out, as has tomorrow night's special concert. Congratulations to
John, Geoff, Steve, and Carl!
May 1, 2008---Technical
issues here have now been ironed out and we're back in business. Plenty of
news for you today. First, as a special finale for the U.S. tour, Asia will be
performing the entire "Asia" album from beginning to end in its original track
order at the May 5th show in San Francisco. The album will comprise the entire
second set of the show. Click
here for the press release regarding this truly
unprecedented event, as well as details on the band's XM Satellite Radio concert
airdate and the Quick Time "Make Your Own Asia Video" contest. In
addition, the special San Francisco show is being promoted through VH-1 Classic
radio reports.
In other tour news, more than one thousand fans
showed up to support Asia in Phoenix, AZ last night. The band truly appreciates
the support and enthusiasm. As a way of remembering your Asia shows, an
amazing new item has been added to the Asia merchandise table. The band is
selling a USB bracelet (complete with Asia logo) which includes the evening's
actual concert in MP3 format. The bracelets are available for sale shortly
after the end of the concert. This groundbreaking new item will also be made
available through the band's online merchandise shop in the near future, with
all concerts eventually being made available for sale. Photos of the bracelets
are available at
www.originalasia.com.
As for the announced 2009 Asia shows, tickets for
Cardiff, Buxton, Birmingham, and London are now on sale via each venue's website
(see below for venue links). We encourage fans to keep checking with the
remaining venues for ticket sale information. This reminder...despite
occasional reports to the contrary, ALL 2009 UK shows will be SEATED.
Lastly (but by no means least), "Phoenix" has
reached #10 on Billboard's chart of Top Internet Albums!

April 25, 2008---Plenty
of worldwide attention for "Phoenix." Is it any wonder???
Here is a
look at the front cover of the Japanese release of
Phoenix
on the King Records label, as well as a newspaper
advertisement
for the CD. We're also passing along a
review from Norway that
clearly shows 9 of 10 stars for "Phoenix."
Our friend Frode offers the
following translation: The members shows a lot of joy
playing the music, its beautiful pieces of music (Parallell
Words is the favourite) , with Wetton's superfantastic
voice. An enormous comeback for the legendary members .
In addition, Asia's
promotional staff has compiled a very
impressive list
(PDF, 94KB) of
reviews for "Phoenix."
April 23, 2008---ASIA
RETURNS TO THE BILLBOARD TOP 200 ALBUM CHART AT NUMBER 73 !!!
First-week sales have placed "Phoenix" at #73 on the prestigious Billboard
chart. Thanks to all of you who bought the CD, bought multiple copies of
the CD, and encouraged others to do the same!
April 22, 2008---GREAT
news for "Phoenix." The album has charted at #75 in Switzerland and at #58 in
Germany. We're still awaiting word on the US charts. Also, there are two
Asia articles we'd like to share today. The first comes from Mr. Mike's Media
Madness. The second is from SkipFish Music:
Last week, fans of the First
Supergroup of the 80's finally
had their wish come true when
the original lineup of Asia
released their first album in 25
years. A quarter century ago,
one of the first bands I ever
became a fan of hit backstage
drama that dissolved the
founding members and led to a
revolving door of musicians from
all over the world. Once it was
past 1990, it seemed these four
men, bassist/singer John Wetton,
keyboardist Geoff Downes,
guitarist Steve Howe and drummer
Carl Palmer, would never sit in
the same room together at the
same time. So it is with some
sense of disbelief that I'm
writing about the new Asia
album, Phoenix. The
original four founding members
are back together and actually
talked to each other long enough
to record something.
All of the hallmarks of the
original band have returned, the
poppy anthems, the quicksilver
instrumental breaks, the
dramatic vocals-everything as it
was. Well, almost everything.
These guys are definitely older
and a feeling of maturity shades
all of the songs. Some of the
Rawk intensity has fallen away
to a more relaxed feel. And John
Wetton's recent heart surgery
has given a theme to the album
that suits the group well-second
life and seize the day.
Asia balances the different
sides of their sound with skill.
Even with a lessened edge, tunes
like the "Never Again" and
"Shadow Of A Doubt" hit like the
Asia of old with Howe's angular
riffs and Wetton's booming
voice. "Alibis" updates a song
originally started during the
band's initial run with Downes
and Howe trading licks
throughout. Prog gets play on
"Sleeping Giant/No Way
Back/Reprise" and "Parallel
Worlds/Vortex/Deya" where the
band's level of musicianship
shines. The age factor comes up
with more ballads than prior
Asia albums such as "Heroine"
and "I Will Remember You".
The most memorable song is the
album closing "An Extraordinary
Life" which comes across like a
TV show theme thanks to it's
lifting melody and positive
lyrics. It's been heavily touted
by the band as their best song
and while it's not that, it is
pretty great.
Although for me Asia stopped
after Then & Now in
1990, the band continued
eventually with John Payne
replacing Wetton as the main
singer/songwriter. Payne's years
in the band has resulted in two
Asias now, one led by Payne and
the other with the original
lineup. There is only one Asia
as far as I'm concerned,
Phoenix is a restablishing
of a legendary band not just a
quick cash in. Phoenix
is easily the best album I've
heard this year so far.
_____________________________________________
It’s no fun being a punch line.
I know it might not be me
directly that is at the center
of the joke, but it does come
dangerously close. I speak of
course of a particular scene
from “The 40 Year Old Virgin”.
In this scene one character
turns to another and makes a
huge joke about an Asia poster
hanging on the wall. And while I
don’t have a poster…I do have a
signed album.
I can’t help it.
I had the distinct pleasure of
seeing the original lineup of
Asia recently…and I had a smile
on my face the whole time. I am
not a huge fan. Dare I say the
band probably doesn’t crack my
top 20, but there was something
about this night that was really
cool.
I primarily came to be a fan of
Asia by the simple inclusion of
Geoff Downes (keyboards) and
Steve Howe (guitar). They had
spent time in the ranks of what
I firmly hold as the third
greatest band ever…Yes. So it
was logical for me to follow
their careers. Now granted I
came “late to the show” as they
say (probably not getting their
huge 1982 hit until 1985ish),
but I did discover their music
and bought a couple albums. It
was decidedly different from
what Yes was doing, but I still
couldn’t help but tap my toe to
some of the tracks.
Come to find out Carl Palmer
(drums) was a star in his own
right from Emerson, Lake, &
Palmer as well. John Wetton was
the outsider (at least to me)
because I was much less familiar
with his work at the time. But I
quickly learned the impressive
resume he possessed. U.K., Roxy
Music, and last but not
least…King Crimson. Not too
shabby.
And as my musical path wound its
way as it did over the next
billion years I kept an eye on
each of their respective careers
after the initial hubbub died
down. Progressive rock musicians
have a nasty habit of flowing in
and out of bands and side
projects all the time. The genre
is so vast that sometimes it is
easy to lose track of who was
where when.
(no spring chickens anymore)
In 2006 I heard the original
band was getting back together
and doing some shows. I thought
it was cool, but nothing more. I
missed the first go round. Life
got in the way, or the schedule
did not jive with my job.
Blasted work! So when they
reconvened and recorded an album
of new material and decided to
give it one more set of shows…I
was in.
I saw the band in a House Of
Blues. I have been in 3
different ones, and they all
vary to some extent. Yet they
all seem to have one
commonality…the concert hall
venue is small and intimate. To
me the room didn’t hold much
more than a thousand people, and
the stage was right in your
face. It is quite something to
see a band that once filled huge
arenas in such a small venue. I
suppose on one hand it was sad,
but on the other…it was very
cool. I can say this. I have
been to a million shows in my
life, and this one was different
in a very real way.
The folks that showed up on this
particular evening were into it.
I didn’t witness people
wandering back and forth from
the toilet, talking, texting, or
waiting for the band to get
around to playing the hit single
as is normal in these settings.
Instead I saw most of the crowd
(70/30 in the guys favor with
the average age being mine or a
bit older) singing along,
pumping fists, and cheering
loudly. Maybe it was the
proximity to the stage. I don’t
know. But the band had the
attention of the crowd without a
doubt all night long.
I had seen Steve Howe before…too
many times to mention. I had
seen Carl Palmer years ago as
well. I knew he would do his
usual Palmer shtick complete
with a gong filled drum solo. I
knew it was coming. I had also
had the chance to meet Geoff
Downes once before as well. He
is probably in the top 1 or 2
nicest rock star guys I have
ever met. So being the
frustrated bass player/vocalist
I am…tonight was about John
Wetton. Over those billion years
I had become a big fan of the
U.K. albums…very underrated and
inspiring. So I planted my
healthy/chunky frame in front of
Mr. Wetton throughout the night.
I was not disappointed. Vocals.
Thick bass. Pedals that rattled
the floor. What more could a
growing boy want?
So for all the talk that I have
been struggling with finding
inspiration and joy in attending
live shows these days…I owe Asia
a huge debt of gratitude. The
evening was fabulous.
Oh…Did I also mention that
before hand I met Geoff once
again and waved at Steve as he
stepped outside to make a phone
call? Like I said…pretty cool
night.
I could go into so much more
detail, but instead I will just
post the set list below for
anyone that cares. Maybe add a
couple photos (still haven’t
taken my personal ones off the
phone yet), a video from the web
to give you a taste of the
show…and let you know I could
care less that I am close to a
punch line in a movie. It was
fun…in the “Heat Of The Moment”.

especially for Phoenix, the next stage in his series of Asia paintings. We can
also confirm that a limited edition reprint will be available, individualized by
Roger Dean. The image presented below cannot portray all the subtlety, nuance,
mood and style of Roger's original painting, so Asia aficionados may consider
acquiring one of the individualized reprints. There will be only a very limited
number.
March 25, 2008---This
is a real treat! Many of you have asked John to share some background
information on the Phoenix tracks.....the inspirations, the thought processes,
etc. And true to his word, John has delivered the following just for you:
NEVER AGAIN
This lyric documents my personal odyssey over the last three years. Many
astrologers believe we are entering The Age of Gemini, and some hold this more
than a little responsible for the drastic change in my perception, and behaviour
from June 2005 to the present day. Each night, as I sing the second verse (...'a
dazzling creation....') on stage, I cannot escape the startling visual image of
Xerxes from the film '300', but the real meat in the sandwich here (as usual) is
the chorus, which is really a kind of distilled mantra for The Ten Commandments.
The verse itself is upbeat and optimistic, also altruistic, but this becomes
triple underlined in the chorus.
NOTHING'S FOREVER
The flip side (hey, it's yin/yang again) of the God-fearing benevolence in track
one is my assumption of the mantle of the Grim Reaper in this song. This is a
long-discussed subject between myself and Richard Palmer-James, my long-time
collaborator and old school friend. You may have noticed the same subject matter
as far back as Doctor Diamond, The Great Deceiver, etc. Placing myself in
Death's icy shoes, I observe, in my global travels, people going about their
everyday lives, unaware that I am within touching distance. Another illustration
of how fragile is our grasp upon things mortal, and a reiteration of the theme
that we must enjoy our time today, for tomorrow, it may be too late.
HEROINE
A song of fealty, and celebration of a divine female entity (take that any way
you'd like), a journey from the blue quasi-suicidal depression of the opening
lines, though to the uplifted unbridled joy of the chorus and bridge, it
underlines the fact that I cannot succeed at living on my own, I am not
independent, and and I need the contact and love of another human being(s). It's
a classic Wetton/Downes musical construction--GD's verse, my chorus, our
combined bridge. I vacillated on the title for weeks. The working title was
'Hostage' (I was writing it about me being the subject of the piece--'I am your
hostage'), then became 'Spirit', then finally the tribute in the second
person--'Heroine'.
NO WAY BACK
In the vein of 'Sole Survivor', this is an 'against the odds', tale of triumph
in the face of adversity, don't give up, never say die, don't take no for an
answer, type of rock song.
ALIBIS As many of you will already know, this is
'Jodie' from rehearsals way back in '82. I re-titled it (in fact, 'Jodie' gets a
nod toward the end of the lyric), and it re-surfaced as a lyric which is typical
of the first album's misogynism, which was difficult to recreate, given the
personal and cultural changes of the last 26 years. There are some strange
words--duplicity, procrastination---all euphemisms for mendacity. A way of tying
up the loose ends from all those years ago. The soloists get a really good work
out on this one, and it's a splendid mix. The original title came from Brian
Lane's wife, Elaine, who was so impressed with the actress Jodie Foster, she
thought it about time someone wrote a song about her. We didn't like the idea,
but the name stuck.
I WILL REMEMBER YOU
I'm allowing myself a look back over my shoulder in this one, a lament over
someone who had a profound effect on me way back when. I remember explaining to
GD in the studio that the lyric had refused to be written any other way, so I
had to roll with it. There is a musical reference to Abba, and a lyrical one,
too, for the connoisseur. I very much like the acoustic version of this
song, because the vocal gets to tell you the story without too much fuss from
the instruments. It's about being so in love you can't think of, or do, anything
else, and the warm memory of that feeling in retrospect.
SHADOW OF A DOUBT
A natural successor to 'Don't Cry' in lyric and instrumentation, it's prog-pop
that really only Asia can do. If this were played acoustically in the same way
that 'Don't Cry' has been--it would have the same effect. An electrified love
song in the '21st century troubadour' style.
PARALLEL WORLDS
A dreamy fantasy about an imaginary lover in another universe. Written from my
hotel room overlooking Niagara Falls after our show there in 2006, this was
originally working titled 'Sitting on Top of The World'. We were playing the
casino, (where we are always pampered, and looked after like Kings), and I
remember the nocturnal view from my room was right over the illuminated falls.
I felt this had somehow to be documented, so I called Rick Nelson, who brought
my acoustic guitar, and I wrote it sitting stark naked in the titanic tub of my
two-acre bathroom. The next thing that happened after I wrote this part, was
that I drained the bath, and Geoff's piece that follows PW is 'Vortex'.
AN EXTRAORDINARY LIFE
This song, more than any other on this CD, encapsulates my experiences over
particularly the last 10 months. The concept of 'carpe diem', or the willingness
and ability to 'seize the moment' is key to my decision to appreciate my life
today. The chorus was written, and demo-recorded at sound check at the State
Theater, New Brunswick in 2007,and titled on the bus to Asti, Italy, later that
summer, just before my spell in surgery. Little did I know it would be such a
dramatically accurate omen. A trip to Croatia unlocked the lyric for me, when I
was introduced to Kairos, who you will meet on 'Phoenix'. He's the mythical
spirit/deity/dude responsible for 'carpe diem'---the time for opportunity.

February 2, 2008---Frontiers
Records has issued another press release on "Phoenix"...
ASIA'S
ORIGINAL LINE-UP RETURNS WITH FIRST NEW STUDIO ALBUM IN 25 YEARS: Phoenix
to be issued by Frontiers Records label. Release Will Coincide With ASIA's 2008
World Tour.
Frontiers Records, the Italian-based record label, announced today acclaimed
British progressive rock group ASIA, will release Phoenix, its first studio
album since 1983. The new album, recorded by all four original members following
singer/bassist John Wetton's emergency heart surgery last August, marks a return
to the classic ASIA sound, with some surprising contemporary twists.
"Everything that was there 25 years ago is still there, and quite simply-if you
liked it then, you'll love it now," says Wetton. "It does exactly what it says
on the tin." "The recording has gone very well, especially since John is
writing, singing and playing great," adds guitarist Steve Howe. "I believe we've
all found the team work creatively rewarding and we look forward to playing some
new songs, on stage."
Phoenix is a collection of songs that speak to the millions of core ASIA fans
who, like the group, have come a long way since the dawn of the MTV age in 1982.
"We're older now, and our audience has grown up with us," says drummer Carl
Palmer. "I think the lyrical themes on this record are some of the best John has
ever developed. One track in particular, Extraordinary Life,' is among the best
tracks we've ever recorded, and I believe could go on to be another ASIA
classic."
Phoenix has a very poignant underlying theme placed at the intersection of love,
discovery and reflection, no doubt due, at least partly, to Wetton's unexpected
serious health issues (which included open heart surgery), and forced the
cancellation of ASIA's 2007 West Coast North American tour and a sold-out tour
of the United Kingdom. "It kind of knocked me sideways on another level," said
Wetton of his recent surgery and physical rehabilitation, in an interview with
journalist Jeb Wright. "You tend to become very aware of your mortality and your
vulnerability." Fortunately for his fans, Wetton has recovered fully and
his bandmates say he is singing and playing better than ever.
"John is a survivor," adds Asia keyboardist Geoff Downes. "He has proved that a
few times, now. There was never any doubt in our minds that he would recover and
be better than ever. We all look forward to hitting the road once again." Adds
Carl Palmer: "The last few years since we reunited have been a very natural
process. The recording started and ended on a big high with the sense that
Asia now was truly reborn and ready to move forward once again - onto the global
stage where we all feel it justly belongs."
Coinciding with the release of Phoenix, ASIA will return to the stage for an
extensive World Tour that kick off on March 1, 2008, in Falmouth, UK. It will be
the first show by the band since Wetton was sidelined last August.
The four original members reunited in 2006, twenty-three years after all four
had last played together. The much publicised reunion resulted in two highly
successful world tours in 2006 and 2007; an acclaimed double live LP and DVD,
(entitled Fantasia: Live In Tokyo); and an overwhelming response from fans and
the media, which continues today.
This will be the third world tour for the four accomplished musicians, whose
debut album, ASIA, was released 26 years ago in 1982, and remains one of
only 4 albums in history to stay at the Billboard album chart position of #1 for
a staggering nine weeks! Formed at the dawn of the MTV era, ASIA was the first
super group of the 1980s, featuring members from Yes, Emerson Lake & Palmer,
King Crimson and The Buggles. Videos made for the band's first two albums, Asia
and Alpha, were a staple part of the historic music channel's initial
programming.
"1982 feels only like yesterday," comments keyboardist Geoff Downes about the
first time the original members of ASIA made their landmark debut album. "Four
guys in the studio, making music together - John, Steve, Carl and me. Fast
forward to 2008. Once again, here we are. The same four guys doing the same
things. Maybe we're all a bit older now, but nothing's really changed that much
over the years - that's the beauty of ASIA."
Continuing his thought, Downes is reflective on the creative success of the
early albums: "What we set out to achieve way back then- Timeless music that
only sounds like the four who created it-, is what we attempted to bring to
Phoenix. Still, it remains contemporary and refreshing to us all. Nothing more,
nothing less. This is the ASIA story, and it remains the same today - so listen
on, and enjoy."
January 28, 2008---Asia's May
26th concert in Lille, France has been moved from Zenith to Theatre Sebastopol.
January 24, 2008---Geoff, Steve, Carl and John have been busy in
the studio, adding finishing touches to their new CD "Phoenix", the first studio
album from the band's members since 1983.
Eagerly anticipated by fans all over the world, "Phoenix" contains an eclectic
selection of songs bound by the unique Asia trade mark.
In 1982, Asia's inimitable sound underpinned a 9 week domination at of USA's
Billboard charts. Only a couple of acts have been at number 1 for longer. The
band confirms that "Phoenix" has been influenced by the same fusion of talents
and heritages which so excited the world in 1982.
"Phoenix" will include rockers such as "Never Again" and "Nothing's Forever",
power ballads such as "Heroine" and "I Will Remember You" and a couple of
mini-epics too, among a dozen new songs.
The Asia reunion was temporarily rocked when lead singer / bassist John Wetton
underwent an emergency triple heart by-pass in August last year. John was
inspired to write "An Extraordinary Life", based on such personal events, which
have made the concept of Carpe Diem dramatically pertinent.
The band is pleased that after 5 months in the studio writing and preparing the
album, it will be delivered to Frontiers on time, ready for an April release,
though the world tour which starts in March will feature a couple of the new
songs.
January 19, 2008---Two
new dates have been added to Asia's world tour. The band will be at Petofi Hall
in Budapest, Hungary on May 30th and at Divadlo Arena in Bratislava, Slovakia on
May 31st.
January 16, 2008---There's
been a change to Asia's May 29th concert in Prague. It will now be held at the
Prumyslovy Palac - Vystaviste.
January 14,
2008---Asia has added a new show to its European
tour. The band will be in Bilbao, Spain on May 17th for a concert at Santana 27.
January 14, 2008---We're proud to announce that
John Wetton is the first-ever recipient of the Classic Rock Society's Lifetime
Achievement Gold Award. John received the award this past weekend during
ceremonies in the UK. The Society wanted to honor John so, since he'd won
just about every CRS award over the years, the group invented a new one for him.
Despite it being a "Gold" award, John received a beautiful silver timepiece

January 1, 2008---John
Wetton and Geoff Downes have both made contributions to a track on the
forthcoming brand new version of Wishbone Ash's seminal 1972 album 'Argus',
presently being recorded by Martin Turner's Wishbone Ash - Martin Turner being
the founder member of British rock legends Wishbone Ash and the key creative
force behind the original award-winning album. John joined Martin in the studio
on December 30th to add his distinctive vocals to “Throw Down the Sword”. The
blend of the voices of John and Martin – two of the true signature voices of
classic rock – proved to be the perfect combination, breathing new life into the
song’s harmony vocal parts, while at the same time retaining full respect for
the original arrangement. Geoff contributed to the project earlier, beautifully
reproducing the Hammond organ parts on “Throw Down the Sword” that were
originally played by John Tout (of Renaissance). A statement on Martin Turner's
official website reads: "Martin Turner’s Wishbone Ash wish to take this
opportunity to thank John and Geoff sincerely for their special contributions to
the album." Further information can be found at
www.wishboneash.co.uk.It's interesting to note here that John replaced
Martin in Wishbone Ash in 1980.

December 13, 2007---A
terrific review of "Fantasia: Live in Japan" DVD to share with all of
you from the December, 2007 issue of Classic Rock Magazine:
A Sumptuous Celebration...Nobody looks or sounds more surprised than the
group themselves when John Wetton announced to a packed Tokyo hall in March
2007: "The original band back on stage after 25 years!" An impeccably filmed set
captures the still-sprightly swagger that garnered over 15 million global sales
back in their glory days. That they arrive on stage to Elgar's Pomp &
Circumstance shows a sense of humour alongside their obvious relish at
rekindling their 80s fire. A visual companion to the recent two-CD set, with an
hour and a half's worth of music plus 40 minutes worth of comprehensive
interview footage with the band, this is the anniversary of their best-selling
debut and surprisingly powerful reunion pretty much nailed.

Classic Rock Magazine
(The DVD received a score of 7 out of 10 in the review.)

November 30, 2007---Asia will be on
mainstream British TV on Wednesday (5th December) at 9pm, when ITV1 screens the
TV premiere of The 40 Year-Old Virgin. As most of you know, "Heat of the
Moment" and a poster of Roger Dean's timeless Dragon artwork (with the names of
all four band members prominently displayed) are featured in the movie. In
addition, discussions about Asia feature significantly in the screenplay, with
some timeless "in-jokes"."Heat of the Moment" is of course featured on the
soundtrack, and the film has one of the all-time great comedy sequences when
Steve Carell has a waxing, something
which naturally could only be filmed once. You can see the other actors corpsing
as the chest hair is plucked. Steve Carell's main claim to fame for British
audiences is that he stars in the US version of "The Office" playing the David
Brent equivalent, Michael Scott. For those who haven't seen "Virgin" - there are
guaranteed belly laughs. And for those who have seen it, we can confirm it is
funnier second and
third time round. The 40 Year-Old Virgin was the summer hit of 2005, reaching
number 1 on both sides of the Atlantic and helping to propel Asia into the
Billboard charts for the first time since 1990.

September 24, 2007- A note
from Asia management:
"We are aware of various sites selling photos and prints relating to Asia.
Please note that unless these can demonstrate legitimate copyright approval,
such product may
be regarded as unauthorised and will probably be benefiting opportunist pirates,
bootleggers and copyright cheats. Nothing less than theft - a criminal offence.
If a product is legitimate, the merchant will have nothing to lose by working
with Asia's official outlets. Ergo, we suggest visiting the official Asia
site for reference. As a
general rule, if it isn't authorised there, it isn't authorised anywhere."
